Anyone who has run an event in Nigeria knows the moment. Three hundred guests are arriving, the venue WiFi is unreliable, and mobile data inside a packed hall is competing with four hundred other phones. If your check-in system needs a live connection, this is precisely when it abandons you.
How offline scanning works
Before your event, you prepare it on each scanner phone. That step downloads your full guest list onto the device itself. From then on, scanning happens entirely on the phone. Verifying a code, recording a check-in and blocking a repeat all happen locally with no connection involved.
When a connection returns, even briefly, every offline check-in syncs to your dashboard on its own. You do not reconcile anything by hand.
The one limitation to plan around
An offline phone can only see what it has scanned itself. It has no way to know what another phone is doing while both are disconnected.
For a single gate this makes no difference. Your device knows every scan it has taken, so a repeat is caught immediately. For several gates running offline at the same time, it means a shared code could be accepted at two gates, and the conflict shows up when the devices reconnect rather than being stopped at the door.
The practical answer at a multi gate event with bad signal is to keep at least one gate on a phone with strong mobile data, and send anything unusual to that gate. At a single gate event, there is nothing to plan around.
The step people skip
Preparing the event needs a connection. That is the whole point of it, since it is what pulls the guest list onto the phone. Do it at home or in the office before you travel, not at the venue.
A phone that was never prepared cannot scan offline. This is the single most common reason someone believes offline mode has failed them.
What to check after the event
If any gate ran offline, make sure every scanner phone has reconnected and synced before you download your report, otherwise it will be missing entries. Give each phone a minute on a good connection at the end of the night.
The bottom line
A system that only works on perfect internet is not built for the venues Nigerian events actually happen in. Prepare your phones before you leave, and your gate keeps running whatever the venue WiFi decides to do that day.
